Jan Connett

I am predominantly a textile artist and enameller, making one-off sculptures and pieces to hang on the wall. My work explores women's journeys through life, their self-images and the representations of themselves that they choose to project to the world.

Original degree: BEd Textiles; followed by HNC Mechanical Engineering, City & Guilds Design/ Stitched Textiles and post graduate Certificate in Managing Health & Social Care.

My career has similarly spanned both the textiles and engineering worlds – and latterly led to project management and strategic planning posts in local government. Late last year I set up a textiles studio and am now working fulltime to create a body of work that brings together my knowledge of textiles, metals and other materials.

The pieces I create are shaped by my own experiences of life and my observations of others: our work, our journeys and relationships. I am interested in our responses to opportunity, how we take account of constraints and permissions, and the outcomes of our choices.

And talking of journeys, my favourite ways of travelling are by bicycle and motorcycle. Preferably early on a sunny morning, with the promise of a perfect day….
